We're very excited about the arrival of the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter in a couple of days, but my heart rate is going up for a different reason.
"Fuk K. Li" (???) is the Director of the Mars Exploration Directorate at NASA/NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
Dr. Li’s directorate is responsible for JPL’s projects exploring Mars, including two orbiters (Mars Odyssey and Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter), two famous rovers (Spirit rover/Spirit and Opportunity rover/Opportunity), the Phoenix lander/Phoenix stationary laboratory which landed near the north pole of Mars in 2008, and the Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity rover/Curiosity rover that was sent to the red planet in 2011 and landed there in 2012.More Fuk Li on Wikipedia.
With the arrival of MRO and its very powerful, highly capable payload, we expect to enter into yet another chapter of Mars exploration. In addition to studying Mars as a system, MRO will also be looking at areas that are potential landing sites for our future landed missions.
