Richard Cockerill
FameRank: 4

"Richard Cockerill" is a former England/English rugby union footballer who played as a Hooker (rugby union)/hooker.

Cockerill was born in Rugby, Warwickshire/Rugby. Joining Leicester Tigers, he established himself as the B of the "ABC club" alongside Graham Rowntree (A) and Darren Garforth (C). Cockerill was an unused replacement for both the 2001 Heineken Cup Final/2001 and 2002 Heineken Cup Final/2002 Heineken Cup finals.

He made his England debut against Argentina in 1997 and later his first match at Twickenham was as a half-time replacement for the Bath hooker Andy Long in Clive Woodward's first match in charge against the Wallabies; Long was young and clearly out of his depth. Cockerill's performance earned him a starting place against New Zealand, where he stood up to Norm Hewitt during the Haka of the All Blacks/haka (see book cover).

He's a Jason Leonard-type figure, one of the true gentlemen of the game. You can't lose someone like 'Wig'. He'll make a good coach because he's such a selfless bloke. He's never been dirty, he just plays the game hard and fair.

He could have played last weekend but we didn't want the injury to drag on. We were just being sensible, as he is not that young in years.
