We hear year after year that this is the year that Congress is going to act. Simply hoping Congress will act is no longer good enough. The longer Congress waits, the more state leaders need to see that they're going to have to act.

It's the first time we've seen all eight Great Lakes governors and two Canadian provinces agree on standards. This region has been a profligate water waster, and we now have a set of standards on the books that helps get ourselves on the same page on how to conserve this resource.

With invasive pest species, we can't turn back the clock, the lakes will be altered for good. Not only do invasive species unravel the food web they also fool public perception: The lakes look cleaner because the food has been stripped out.
