Nancy was a writer with a lot of soul. That's something that most critics either don't have the opportunity to share with you or just can't. She had the kind of humanity that is embracing. It was always a surprise to see the tremendous artistry of her writing, the wit and flair. I really liked her. She'll be missed, that's for sure.

It's amazing that he finished the cycle. I think it was probably the work that sustained him in the end.

He was a giant. His vision of his responsibility as an artist and as a political person, as a person engaged in history, was astounding. He set out to reclaim African-American history for African-Americans. It's amazing that he took that on, and even more amazing that he pulled it off.
