A lot of them don't know how to go about starting up a summer food program for students, or how to save money. We want to help them. These are the people who are working in the trenches every day and we want to tell them that what they do matters.

At this food bank, 75 percent of our participation and giving base are from various religious groups. People of faith have at their heart the caring for the hungry. I've gotten excited as it all seems to be making more sense to me. We can do this. We can end hunger in East Texas.

I echo that. I believe we will end hunger in America, when we say to ourselves 'this is no longer acceptable.' The numbers and resources are on our side to do it.

It was a Godsend that the freezer was ready to go just a month before the hurricanes. I was so pleased with the food bank's response.

That protects the dignity of those who use them. Treating the hungry with dignity and reaching out to the community is what our food bank is all about.

The reason we started the program was because we found out there were kids going home over the weekend without food to eat. They come back Monday morning hungry and not ready to learn, sleeping on their desks and having some discipline problems. We want to make sure people do not have to make choices of food or utilities, or food or medical bills.

Now more than ever I think that. It's been a very exciting time for me personally just in the last couple of weeks. This is a very progressive, even entrepreneurial food bank. We're on the cutting edge of food banks in America. The atmosphere here is very enthusiastic and the people here seek solutions and like to try new programs to be more effective. I love that.

For me, living out my faith is to exemplify Christ's example. When I read my Bible, it tells me to care for the hungry and do it in a way that maintains their dignity. It says to me, 'By this they will know that you are my disciples ...' (John 13:35). Christ treated people with dignity, and that's why I do what I do and why I respond to America's hunger.

Just call us and ask, we'll be happy to come.
