Olivier Messiaen
FameRank: 4

"Olivier Messiaen" was a French composer, organist and ornithology/ornithologist, one of the major composers of the 20th century. His music is rhythmically complex; harmonically and melody/melodically it often uses modes of limited transposition, which he abstracted from his early compositions and improvisations. Messiaen also drew on his Roman Catholic faith for his pieces.

He travelled widely and wrote works inspired by diverse influences such as Japanese music, the landscape of Bryce Canyon National Park/Bryce Canyon in Utah and the life of St. Francis of Assisi. He said he perceived colours when he heard certain Chord (music)/musical chords (a phenomenon known as synesthesia/synaesthesia in its literal manifestation); combinations of these colours, he said, were important in his compositional process. For a short period Messiaen experimented with the Parameter (music)/parametrisation associated with "total serialism", in which field he is often cited as an innovator. His style absorbed many exotic musical influences such as Indonesian gamelan (tuned percussion often features prominently in his orchestral works).

The human being is flesh and consciousness, body and soul; his heart is an abyss which can only be filled by that which is godly.

No one should be allowed to make music as if he were made of wood. One must reproduce the musical text exactly, but not play like a stone.

Ascension He has gone away, the Well-Beloved, For our sake! He is risen, the Well-Beloved, For our sake! He has prayed, the Well-Beloved, For our sake! He has spoken, He has sung, The Word was with God.

I give bird songs to those who dwell in cities and have never heard them, make rhythms for those who know only military marches or jazz, and paint colors for those who see none.
