Monte Kiffin
FameRank: 6

"Monte Kiffin" is an American football coach, currently the assistant head coach of defense for the Dallas Cowboys . He is widely considered to be one of the preeminent defensive coordinators in modern football, as well as one of the greatest defensive coordinators in NFL history. Father of the widely imitated “Tampa Cover 2” defense, Kiffin's concepts are among the most influential in modern college and pro football.

Before taking the role as Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator, Kiffin served as assistant head coach for the USC Trojans football/University of Southern California where his son Lane Kiffin was named head coach on January 12, 2010, and before that he served under his son as the defensive coordinator at the Tennessee Volunteers football/University of Tennessee. Possibly due to the mounting pressure on his son's poor coaching records, on November 29, 2012, Kiffin resigned from his position to pursue other opportunities in the NFL. He previously served 26 years as an NFL assistant coach, including 13 years as defensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, with whom he won Super Bowl XXXVII. His defensive units have finished ranked in the top 10 in points allowed and yards allowed 10 times during that period, an NFL record.

We never mentioned the ranking all year long. Sixteen weeks, I never even tell the defense. They may read the paper but we don't even talk about where we're ranked because the most important thing is winning. At the end of the year it is an accomplishment. They should be proud of it.

All year long, 16 weeks, we never told the defense what they were ranked. They may have read it in the paper, I don't know.

That quarterback is unbelievable. That throw he made on the third play of the game, I mean, I don't know who else makes that throw. An absolutely perfect throw.

He was around the office and practice. He was a ball boy with different teams. He always wanted to coach.

That gets to you a little bit because you know he's landed.

I've known [James] since he was 5 years old. I saw that boy grow up. Something like this kind of gets to you.

He's done a really good job, but it's the whole defense. We've really tackled well.

It's not like Gene hasn't helped us. And we didn't mind helping him because he's about as respectful and humble a guy as you'll come across. And trust me, we'll keep asking him for scouting reports on guys, because he always seems to be working with great players.

He's not just a good back or a really good back. He's a great back. So we've got to really be on it. He's got tremendous speed, he's got power, he can catch the football. He's the complete running back.
