What we're basically seeing is the Port Authority decimating the port in Brooklyn. This is part of the pattern of them shutting down the port.

It's very sad that the city and Port Authority care more about real estate than finding ways to work with the companies who are being damaged by this mishandling of maritime commerce.

The broader question still exists. What will happen with those 623 jobs at the port if the Port Authority's current policy is maintained?

Cruise and containers can happily coexist. The container port is a vibrant and essential component of Brooklyn's varied waterfront. By bringing both aesthetics and billions of dollars in economic activity, it provides Brooklyn with a worthwhile use for her storied piers, and brings much-needed wealth to our local economy.

That's the difference between a small-time service sector playground and a full-scale port operation that works five or six days a work.
