Mahmoud Abbas
FameRank: 6

"Mahmoud Abbas", also known by the Kunya (Arabic)/kunya "Abu Mazen" (, ), is a Palestinian people/Palestinian statesman. He has been the Chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization (Palestine Liberation Organization/PLO) since 11 November 2004 and has been President of the Palestinian Authority since 15 January 2005. Abbas is a member of the Fatah (??? Fata?) party.

Mahmoud Abbas was elected to serve until 9 January 2009, but due to Fatah–Hamas conflict/Palestinian Internal conflict he unilaterally extended his term for another year and continues in office even years after that second deadline expired. As a result of this, Fatah's main rival, Hamas announced that it would not recognise the extension or view Abbas as rightful president. Abbas was chosen as the President of the Palestinian Authority by the Palestine Liberation Organization's Central Council on 23 November 2008, a job he had held unofficially since 8 May 2005.

Abbas served as the first Prime Minister of the Palestinian Authority from March to October 2003 when he resigned citing lack of support from Israel and the United States as well as "internal incitement" against his government. Before being named prime minister, Abbas led the PLO's Negotiations Affairs Department. One of his chief negotiators is Saeb Erekat.

We cannot build foundations of a state without rule of law.

We are trying to lead our people to a just peace and to security, and we want to pave the way for the next generations.

The withdrawal of the [Israeli] army and settlers from the Gaza Strip does not signal the end of the occupation.

Do you think I am happy to work like this? I want to earn some living to feed my children.

We cannot build a viable state with a country that is disintegrating into small pieces.

From today we will not allow armed chaos, the taking of the law into individual hands, or attacks on public property.

We need international support so that our people live a life of normality, of dignity, of liberty and freedom. I hope that our cry for freedom may be heard.

If we win the legislative elections , we will never recognize the state of Israel.

We have one law for everyone and no one is above the law. We are not going to tolerate chaos after today.
