He played as a shortstop in Major League Baseball (MLB) for 18 seasons from through . In 1956, Aparicio won the American League (AL) Major League Baseball Rookie of the Year Award/Rookie of the Year Award playing for the Chicago White Sox, and helped lead the "Go-Go White Sox" to the American League Pennant championship in 1959. Aparicio was one of the most dominant shortstops of his era and was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Baseball Hall of Fame balloting, 1984/1984. A 10-time Major League Baseball All-Star Game/All-Star (13 games) and a 9-time American League stolen base leader, he was nominated for the Major League Baseball All-Century Team in .
