Making it non-mandatory for usage may free up the state from any funding; but we have spoken with our insurance company and they have said not enforcing the use of the seatbelts would open us up to many liability issues. I'm not completely against (the bill). My main concern is whether or not the school will receive the $10,000-$15,000 needed to make the change?

It's my understanding that the way the bill is written, it keeps the legislature from being responsible for the funding.

First of all, I have to say that I am not opposed to seatbelts. But, when you put seatbelts on a bus, you effectively reduce the seating number on the bus.

But that's larger schools, not us. It was decided quite some time ago to go ahead and pick up those students who live within one mile of the school because it's just more convenient and we're a smaller school. Besides, the school bus is still the safest way to get to school.
