Rutledge was born in Victoria, British Columbia. He won the Canadian Juvenile Championship in 1975 at the Gorge Vale Golf Club in Victoria and the Canadian Junior Championship in 1977. He played in his first Men's major golf championships/major at the 1990 Open Championship, where he was high on the leaderboard going into the weekend, but ended up finishing T-57. He played in his second and last major the following year at the 1991 Open Championship but he missed the cut. Rutledge's best finish on the Asian Tour money list was third in 1994. He has finished third on the Canadian Tour's Order of Merit three times. He is one of the winningest players in Canadian Tour history, winning six times on tour.

It was a good round until I got to No. 17 and then it turned into a great round. I was holding on to a good round and then all of a sudden the chips fell in the right spot. That is the game of golf for you.

I got everything I wanted out of that round.

I couldn't be happier. This is not my lowest round, but I'm awfully proud of this one.

The radio stations, television stations and the newspapers were calling. But I haven't been home. My wife, Jill, has been taking all the heat.

I honestly hit a good shot there. I caught a bad break on a difficult little hole. The guy in front of me hit the exact same shot and was fine. It's too bad. I really wanted this one. I clawed my way back, but came up just short.

That green is pretty fast from right to left, so I figured that if I could just get it rolling on the right line, hopefully it wasn't going to go too far by. I had a good line on it and really good speed.

I got off to a really good start so I knew if I could get three or four more the rest of the way then I would have a chance to win the golf tournament. I've worked so hard. I knew I had a good round in me and I got it all together today.

If I tell the truth, it wasn't even in the back of my mind. I wanted to put together a solid round, make a nice check and get some momentum for when the Tour came back to the States.

It was a good round until I got to No. 17 and then it turned into a great round. I just tried to hang in there. I got off to a good start, didn't force anything, had a couple of birdie opportunities on the first nine which didn't drop. But everything fell into place on those last few holes.
