You can shut a valve off as tight as you think it can be, but when they're old like that, you don't always know for sure. I would say the gas line is at least 50 years old.

The lucky part is the guys who were working on the line were not injured. The line, when it ruptured, went straight up to the roof, and they were able to clear out.
