"Eric Anthony Mangini" is an American football coach who currently serves as the defensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League. Mangini has been with the 49ers since 2013 and served as the team's tight ends coach for two seasons.

Mangini is a former head coach, having served as the coach of the New York Jets from 2006 until 2008 and the Cleveland Browns in 2009 and 2010. Prior to taking his current position with the 49ers, Mangini was an NFL analyst for ESPN.

Mangini is known for being a former assistant under Bill Belichick, serving under him as a defensive assistant while Belichick was the defensive coordinator with the Jets and later following him to the New England Patriots, where he succeeded Romeo Crennel as defensive coordinator in 2005 after Crennel took the head coaching position with the Browns (a position he would also be succeeded in by Mangini).

Each year we've lost guys. We just have to adjust to the transition and that's what we're doing.

I'm excited about the job and I'm excited about the opportunity.

I thank you guys for having the vision to make me your head coach.

I think Chad is a great competitor. I think he's a hard worker. I think he's smart, and I respect all the things Chad has done. I haven't talked to any of the doctors. I haven't sat down with Chad. So until I do that, I won't really feel comfortable commenting any further.

This is a team effort 100 percent. I am going to work with Terry as much as I can. He's going to work with me as much as he can so that we can get the right players for the system and build moving forward.

I think the main qualities that made this job attractive to me were the commitment by the front office to winning, and to building an organization for the long term. I look forward to building an organization that people can be proud of, that's built with character, that's built with toughness, built with discipline.

We're going to play whatever gives us the best chance to win. So if it's 3-4, 4-3, 2-6, whatever it is, if it's going to help us beat our opponent that's what we're going to play.

If you want to be the best you have to beat the best and if we can win this division, I think there's going to be some really good competition.

Scared is not a word I use.
