One would hope this would stiffen the spine of other governors.

No one is ever going to be executed under this bill. People are so horrified by a particular crime, and they want to wrap themselves in the feeling of indignation that the public understandably experiences.

It is entirely fitting that victim survivors be heard in the criminal justice system, but a criminal trial is not an occasion for national grief and mourning. We need to separate national catharsis from the criminal justice system, otherwise we have the justice of the mob.

It's not news that a guilty man was executed. I think it would be very silly for supporters of the death penalty to claim any vindication.

The defense has not been blowing smoke in raising issues of competency. I think they have very serious reasons to believe that his thinking is disordered.
