It is far less cumbersome to sell it at the gate and you have essentially no waste -- it's in a refrigerator, so anything unsold can be sold on the next flight. All the food put on the plane that isn't sold is waste. We also don't have any problems with running out of the meals passengers want -- we can just pull extra meals from the next gate.

We've raised millions of dollars for this worthy cause over the past 21 years through Celebrity Ski. All of us at American Airlines are dedicated to supporting our communities, and that commitment from our employees and partners shows in long-running efforts like this one.

But it was the 39 percent rise in jet fuel costs in the last month alone that pushed us to make this decision.

Do they like what we're doing? No. Are they surprised by it? No.

We've said all along that if rules regarding Love Field were changed, we would shift flights from D/FW Airport and vigorously compete for every customer at Love Field.

It's not as if Southwest's situation at Love Field has suddenly changed – it's always been one of their smaller stations.
