Ashley Giles
FameRank: 5

"Ashley Fraser Giles" Order of the British Empire/MBE is an English retired cricketer. Giles played the entirety of his 14-year first-class cricket/first-class career at Warwickshire County Cricket Club. He played 54 Test cricket/Test matches and 62 One Day Internationals for England national cricket team/England before being forced to retire due to a recurring hip injury.

Giles started his career as a Seam bowling/fast bowler before an early injury forced him to become a left-arm orthodox/slow left-arm spinner. He made his first-class debut for Warwickshire in 1993, but it was 1996 when he gained a regular place in the side, winning the NBC Denis Compton Award for being 'The Most Promising Young Player' at the club. Giles was awarded his One Day International debut against Australia national cricket team/Australia in May 1997, and 36 wickets in the 1998 season led to his first Test match against South Africa national cricket team/South Africa, although it would be a further two years before he would play another Test for England.

Everyone is on edge, the dressing room is very quiet and it is a 'this can't be happening to us' sort of scenario.

It is a lot worse sitting up there than it was in the middle.

We've come a long way since Lord's.

It's fantastic for the game, hopefully we have done a lot for it already and hopefully we can do a bit more yet.

All sorts of thoughts go through your head, 'this can't be happening to us, we don't deserve this' but Hoggy held his nerve and when you are out there you do feel you are in control.

[Continuity of selection] helps, ... You don't want to be going out there thinking, 'This could be your last game, if you don't get a wicket you're out'. In the last 12 to 18 months this team has done some special things because we've been consistent in selection. Fletch and [Michael] Vaughan have a lot of faith in the people they select.

I don't think I'll score more important runs in my career and I don't think Hoggy will hit a better extra cover drive in his career.

It's reversing at 95mph.
