We are far more prepared today.

Helena has exceptional interpersonal skills, which allow people to follow her leadership regardless of how high she sets the academic bar.

She's open to new ideas and opportunities and will be a natural for creating partnerships with Western Connecticut State University and capitalizing on the rich resources the university brings. Most importantly, she puts children first in all of her educational decision making.

People were horrified. Some of the principals started crying. It must have lasted for 20 minutes just watching and listening to the commentators. We spent another 20 minutes working out what to do, and then we went to the schools.

I've learned from doing both that we tend to get more benefit from a low-key approach. You run the risk with the high-profile approach of stressing parents and students, which can lead to test anxiety and choking.

This is a good example of where we excel.

We had to go back over the whole process again.

During 9/11, we had a rapid response. We were in the secondary schools. We were in the elementary schools, and we were at headquarters. We touched base with all the schools and worked our way through the district. We started immediately.

This is information we can bring to legislators to show them why we need to add resources to these areas.
