"Thomas "Tom" William Courtney" is a retired United States/American Athletics (sport)/athlete, winner of two gold medals at the 1956 Summer Olympics.

Born in Newark, New Jersey, Tom Courtney came into national prominence while a student at Fordham University, winning the 1955 National Collegiate Athletic Association/NCAA 880 yd (805 m) title.

An Amateur Athletic Union/AAU champion in 400 m at 1956 and in 880 yd (805 m) at 1957 and 1958, Courtney had a memorable duel with Derek Johnson of Great Britain in the 1956 Summer Olympics/1956 Olympic 800 m final. Johnson took a narrow lead with 40 meters to go, but finally Courtney won by 0.13 seconds, and collapsed with exhaustion. He later wrote:

: "It was a new kind of agony for me. My head was exploding, my stomach ripping and even the tips of my fingers ached. The only thing I could think was, 'If I live, I will never run again.'"

The medal ceremony had to be delayed for an hour while he and Johnson recovered. But Courtney did run again. He was the anchorman on the gold medal 4×400 m relay race/relay team. He also set a world record of 1:46.8 in the 880 yd (805 m) on May 24, 1957.

Over the past two months, we have lost some confidence in the company's ability to generate the growth necessary to meet our estimates.

Worldwide Internet retail sales were almost $23 billion in 1999 and we expect that to double in 2000. Street estimates for worldwide sales in 2002 are approximately $105 billion, with $65 billion of that in the U.S. This implies an annual growth rate of 80 percent worldwide.

The quarter was no surprise, but the future guidance was very favorable. The forecast of single-digit losses is a sea change for Amazon. We believe this is a key inflection point for the stock and that it will take off from here.

Although it may have one last run going into the holiday period, we believe that Amazon has several red flags that demand investor attention.

Why are we downgrading the stock now? Mainly because of our belief that sales may not be advancing at the rate that we had previously anticipated and also because of the impending departure of Galli.

I think this company will do a better job of inventory management as these businesses mature, ... Remember, they've only been in some of them for six months or so.

I'm initiating a bill next year that would make it so it's a parental decision, ... If it is, then it should satisfy everyone's fears. We don't have a bill yet, but we're working on it.

What happened is that the bar ran out of liquor -- they took away the punch bowl.

The one thing it said was under no circumstance would any government agency be allowed to keep the fingerprints on file.
