In some ways, it's a lot more technical than going out and throwing a streamer for bass or a little nymph pattern for bluegills or a popper for bass. Trout seem like they can be a lot more finicky.

Like I always tell my girls, a lot of people always wish they could go do something but they never get the chance of doing it. I may never get rich, but it's like getting on the back of a stallion with no saddle. You get on and hang on and see where it's going to take you.

In northeast Iowa at a small bait and tackle shop, I bought a cheap kit for $10 or $15 that had been sitting on the shelf for many years, and started using all the materials to tie flies.

He didn't know he even had one. But he said if I could get it down, I could have it.

The two pinnacles I had that I've reached were to catch a fish on my own pattern and to be published in a book. I'm happy I've done that.
