"Walter Merrill "Pop" Williams" was a professional baseball pitcher whose playing career spanned nine seasons, including three in Major League Baseball. He was born in Bowdoinham, Maine on May 19, 1874. Williams batted right-handed and threw left-handed. Over his major league career, Williams compiled a win–loss record (pitching)/win-loss record of 16–25 with a 3.17 earned run average (ERA), 41 complete games, two shutouts and 132 strikeouts in 47 games, all starts. He was also the manager (baseball)/coach of the Bowdoin College baseball team during the spring of 1903. During his time in the majors and the minor league baseball/minor leagues, Williams occasionally played outfield and first base. In the majors, Williams played for the Washington Senators (1891–1899)/Washington Senators (1898), Chicago Cubs (1902–1903), Philadelphia Phillies (1903) and the Boston Beaneaters (1903).

It's always fun to face Lee and I know he wants to beat the old ball coach. I respect Lee a great deal and he coaches like I coach. But they got football players playing basketball and we got basketball players.
