Often, patients show mental illness and insobriety at the same time. People say that we should hold off on treatment until a patient is clean and sober, but it doesn't work that way.

Everyone has been great. We've worked out the kinks, and I think it's working quite well considering the shortage of beds across the state for patients without insurance.

It's OK to talk about mental illness. No one should be embarrassed about it.

We sometimes have to wait up to two weeks before a bed is open for them. So we try to treat the patient here, get them on medication long enough for a bed to open or until they're well enough to send home.

We will hold a patient who says they want to harm themselves or someone else or has already acted on it. We don't feel comfortable sending them home, because we can't follow up. Usually, though, a family member will get involved within two days.
