"Michael "Mike" Funk" is a retired professional ice hockey defenceman (ice hockey)/defenceman previously with the Vancouver Canucks organization of the National Hockey League (NHL). He was drafted by the Buffalo Sabres in the second round, 43rd overall, of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.

Funk spent his junior hockey career with the Portland Winter Hawks of the Western Hockey League where he compiled 121 points and 312 penalty minutes in four seasons. Funk signed his first professional contract in June 2006 with the Buffalo Sabres, and made his NHL debut with the team on November 18 of the 2006–07 NHL season/2006–07 season. He played in five NHL games with the Sabres in 2006–07, recording two assists.

On July 6, 2009, he was signed by the Vancouver Canucks and was playing with their American Hockey League affiliate, the Manitoba Moose. Funk received a concussion and was forced into retirement after a hit to the head during practice from teammate Patrick Kaleta. His return is unlikely.

I think I had a pretty good season. Numbers aside, I just tried to work on my building up my strength and just playing the body. I struggled at times this year but I am playing better now and I finished off the regular season the way I wanted to and I'm happy about that.

I mean, this is the year. We really want to go places. We're going to work as hard as we can to get there.

It was another great experience to get a chance to learn from Coach Sutter. It was the same thing I brought back from Buffalo: The intensity. He is probably one of the most intense people I have ever met, but if you are a hard worker you will do fine.

I need to add some more strength to my lower body and make sure I have the endurance to log the ice time and keep up the intensity.
