Marwan Barghouti
FameRank: 6

"Marwan Hasib Ibrahim Barghouti" is a Palestinian people/Palestinian political figure convicted and imprisoned for murder by an Israeli court. He is regarded as a leader of the First Intifada/First and Second Intifadas. Barghouti at one time supported the Israel-Palestine peace process/peace process, but later became disillusioned, and after 2000 went on to become a leader of the Al-Aqsa Intifada in the West Bank. Barghouti is said to have founded Tanzim. He has been called by some "the Palestinian Nelson Mandela/Mandela".

Israeli authorities have called Barghouti a terrorist, accusing him of directing numerous attacks, including suicide bombings, against civilian and military targets alike. Barghouti was arrested by Israel Defense Forces in 2002 in Ramallah. He was tried and convicted on charges of murder, and sentenced to five life sentences. Marwan Barghouti refused to present a defense to the charges brought against him, maintaining throughout that the trial was illegal and illegitimate.

Barghouti still exerts great influence in Fatah from within prison. With popularity reaching further than that, there has been some speculation whether he could be a unifying candidate in a bid to succeed Mahmud Abbas.cite web/title=Why a Jailed Dissident Is Palestine's Best Hope

Mr. Arafat cannot accept less than 100 percent of the 1967 border of the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Marwan, of course, would like to see one list, and we did everything possible in order to be one list.

We do not hesitate to apologize to the Palestinian people for the mistakes that have been committed in recent years.

Resistance is a holy right for the Palestinian people to face the Israeli occupation. Nobody should forget that the Palestinian people negotiated for 10 years and accepted difficult and humiliating agreements, and in the end didn't get anything except authority over the people, and no authority over land, or sovereignty.

Nobody has the mandate to sign an agreement which violates our full rights. The right of return, full sovereignty over Jerusalem, the '67 borders ... nobody has the mandate. ... I have full confidence and trust ... Mr. Arafat will not do that.
