It's not known how the male got out there, but it's likely that the tide was lower at that time. It happens a few times a year where people venture out, and then of course the tide comes up quite quickly and we have fairly high tides right now.

He was cold and wet but he was apparently in fairly good spirits after the rescue.

The way the rescue was actually accomplished was the crews waded across lower down the river and then they moved upstream and they walked him back downstream.
