She knew gay people long before me. She was well-grounded, well-versed in all people's rights. It's not surprising she would stand up for us when nobody else would. She not only talked the talk, she walked the walk.

I think the world has lost a great voice for social justice, but particularly for gays and lesbians we have lost one of our greatest allies. She was always there when we called.

I was there for her. I buried one of my dearest friends. I was not going to get caught up in the minutia of where [the funeral] was held. This was a home-going service she would have been proud of. She was always controversial, so it's not surprising her funeral was controversial.

It's not surprising. Through her mother's whole illness, Bernice is the one that's been looking after her mother.

Eddie Long and Bernice hugged and embraced me. Bernice and I don't agree on every issue, but I love her like a sister. She is part of my extended family.
