Jimmy Maher
FameRank: 5

"James Patrick Maher" is a former Australian cricketer. He is "an attractive left-handed batsman with a clumping cover-drive".

He was first selected to play for Australia national cricket team/Australia in two one-day matches in 1997–98, due to illness and injury respectively to Mark Waugh and Steve Waugh, but his performances were unspectacular. The following two seasons were a prolific pair for Maher playing for Queensland Bulls/Queensland, a time which included a period at Glamorgan County Cricket Club/Glamorgan. In 2001–02, he became the first batsman to reach 1000 runs in the Pura Cup.

He came back into the international fold in 2002, after the Waugh brothers were sacked following an ODI season in which Australia failed to make the finals of the triangular ODI series. He responded with a steady innings of 95 against South Africa cricket team/South Africa. He was included in the Australian ODI squad as a spare batsman and as a fill-in wicketkeeper for the next few seasons, including the 2003 Cricket World Cup, but never managed to obtain a regular place in the side.

To come out there today and show patience like he did is not that easy to do when you're hitting white balls around all the time.

I wasn't doing it for any other reason other than to put us in the best position to win the game.

I said last game we were one out and one back coming into the straight. Now I think we've just hit the front with 100 to go.

They looked like they had been around for 15 or 20 years. They showed a lot of maturity and that partnership was a match-winner as it gave us a platform to build on for the rest of the innings.
