"Jeffrey John Crowe" is a former New Zealand cricketer. He is the son of Dave Crowe and elder brother of Martin Crowe. They are cousins of Academy Awards/Oscar winning actor, Russell Crowe.

Although the elder of the two Crowe brothers, Jeff first came to Test cricket in 1982–83, a year after his younger brother Martin Crowe/Martin. This was partly because he had launched his own career in South Australia, where he played with considerable success from 1977 and 1982. The Australian selectors were interested, but he decided to return to his own country where he became a reliable Fielding (cricket)/fielder who could also keep wicket. Given the task of going in at first wicket down against the West Indian fast bowlers in the Caribbean in 1984–85, he responded with a knock of 112 in the follow on at Sabina Park. He captained New Zealand in six Tests.

For a time, Jeff Crowe was manager of the New Zealand cricket team and in 2004 he became an International Cricket Council/ICC match referee.

While it is understood that there was substantial provocation from a section of the Perth crowd, there is a standard required and a player needs to keep his emotions under some control.

Although I have sympathy for Ricky I cannot accept his move towards the on-field umpires as they made a move towards resuming play. He did not ask for the third umpire to be consulted but when he made that move and spoke to the officials I believe his involvement played a part in prompting the referral.

The player admitted what he had done was wrong and I took this, together with his previously exemplary conduct, into account. However, it is important to show that dissent of any sort at an umpire's decision is unacceptable and the player's punishment for his actions illustrates that fact.

I think they need to sort it out.
