When the mayor was elected, the administrative assistant was a position he requested be added. Because he was the first black mayor in Selma - something that got attention worldwide - he felt he needed someone skilled in administrative work. If you go into his office, he's rarely ever sitting there by himself. Calls came in all the time requesting him to speak and still do.

The position of city attorney is a full-time position in Selma. But he is not an elected official. He is appointed by the mayor (James Perkins Jr.).

I think this is wonderful for the city that the community center is here to help people.
