Greg Chappell
FameRank: 6

"Gregory Stephen Chappell" Order of the British Empire/MBE is a former cricketer who captained Australia between 1975 and 1977 and then joined the breakaway World Series Cricket (WSC) organisation, before returning to the Australian captaincy in 1979, a position he held until his retirement 1984. The second of three brothers to play Test cricket, Chappell was the pre-eminent Australian batsman of his time who allied elegant stroke making to fierce concentration. An exceptional all round player who bowled medium pace and, at his retirement, held the world record for the most catches in Test cricket, Chappell's career straddled two eras as the game moved toward a greater level of professionalism after the WSC schism.

In what context he said it, nobody knows. You got to get the truth.

It was a frank discussion about Indian cricket, present and future, and much of what I said was aimed at motivating Saurav for the Bulawayo test. In that regard our exchange was beneficial.

It is disappointing that what was a private discussion between the captain and myself has become a cause of public speculation. Even more disappointing is that much of what has been written does not represent the discussion fairly.

Things come up from time to time and people get frustrated. They say things which probably they don't really mean and are not as important as they are made out to be. I think if we keep looking at success a lot of these issues would fade away.

In both the finals in Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe we got into positions from where we should have won but we didn't. But if we keep getting into those positions we will win some.

Saurav and I discussed the balance of the team and there were a number of issues but that's all I want to say at this stage.

I am disappointed that Tendulkar wouldn't be seen on this tour, but it is important that he recovers completely and is fit for India's future engagements.

I have been through this before. There is always going to be something bubbling around the place. We can't get worried about it or get involved in it.
