It couldn't have been more perfect. For the team to win 2-0, for Shay Given to keep a clean sheet and then to throw Alan's record-breaking goal into the mix -- it was just what we needed.

I would have thought I got a good response from the players. I can only be myself and whatever has come my way I have taken on the chin and got on with it.

Everything was perfect because it was a win, he scored from open play, which I think he would have preferred to have done, and it couldn't be a more perfect day for Alan Shearer, the rest of the players and the fans.

We knew the crowd would be with us today and the volume was frightening. This is the best crowd in the country.

I had a chat with Albert before the game, and he asked if he could go home. I haven't got a problem with that and there's nothing sinister in it. He's a very professional person.

But Alan was in the dugout and as a future manager one day, I think he enjoyed it. He spoke to the lads in the dressing room. If he doesn't make that, he should be fit for Saturday against Everton.

It will be touch and go. Apparently, he's certainly not behind (his recovery) time, if anything he might be a little bit ahead of time.

It's great to score early. You can never score too early and I think we needed that away from home because we haven't scored too many.

Whatever job Alan does for this club, whatever job Alan would want to do for this club, he will always do his very best. He's assisting me brilliantly.
