FameRank: 4

"George Lawrence Mikan, Jr.", nicknamed "Mr. Basketball", was an American professional basketball player for the Chicago American Gears of the National Basketball League (United States)/National Basketball League (NBL) and the Los Angeles Lakers/Minneapolis Lakers of the NBL, the Basketball Association of America (BAA) and the National Basketball Association (NBA). Invariably playing with thick, round spectacles, the 6 ft 10 in 245 lb. Mikan is seen as one of the pioneers of professional basketball, redefining it as a game of so-called center (basketball)/big men with his prolific rebound (basketball)/rebounding, Block (basketball)/shot blocking and his talent to shoot over smaller defenders with his ambidextrous hook shot, result of his own Mikan Drill.

Mikan had a successful player career, winning seven NBL, BAA, and NBA championships, an All-Star MVP trophy, and three scoring titles. He was a member of the first four NBA All-Star games, and the first six All-BAA and All-NBA Teams. Mikan was so dominant that he caused several rule changes in the NBA, among them widening the foul lane—known as the "Mikan Rule"—and introducing the shot clock.

It's really Jim's game they're playing now.

Here's one for you.

Cheetahs are fast. They run 70 miles an hour, and our jersey numbers happen to start in the 70's.

We have to prove that we're for real, that we're going to be around. I had to do that with the ABA, too, but I also had to fight the NBA. What's nice about roller hockey is that the NHL hasn't knocked us. It sees us as a continuation of its season.

Oh, I suppose so. But so far we haven't found anybody 6 ft. 10 in..

I had to learn to avoid stepping on (her) toes, and that made me more nimble on my feet.

I'm having way too much fun at this. And it's great to be back in Chicago. I get to lunch with Ray Meyer, my old DePaul coach, at least once a week.
