Gary Payton
FameRank: 6

"Gary Dwayne Payton" is an American former professional basketball point guard. He is best known for his 13-year tenure with the Seattle SuperSonics, and holds Seattle franchise records in points, assists, and steals. He has also played with the Milwaukee Bucks, Los Angeles Lakers, Boston Celtics and Miami Heat, the last with whom he won an NBA championship. He was nicknamed "The Glove" for his excellent defensive ability.

The only point guard ever to win the NBA Defensive Player of the Year award, Payton is widely considered one of the best of all time at that position. He was selected to the NBA All-Defensive First Team nine times, an NBA record he shares with Michael Jordan, Kevin Garnett and Kobe Bryant. He was also a nine-time NBA All-Star and a nine-time All-NBA Team member. He was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame on September 8, 2013. Payton got his nickname "The Glove" when Payton's cousin called him during the 1993 Western Conference (NBA)/Western Conference Finals series against Phoenix Suns/Phoenix and told him, "you're holding Kevin Johnson like a baseball in a baseball glove/glove," and the nickname was born.

Considered the "NBA's reigning high scorer among point guards" in his prime, Payton is referred to as "probably as complete a guard as there ever was" by Basketball Hall of Famer Gail Goodrich.

It felt good to come out and get a welcome like that, ... It makes you feel like you?re at home.

We're very close, and when he steps up for me like that, it's hard to tell him no.

That's not why they came here, to win a Western Conference championship.

I'm going to try to help Jason as much as possible. He has never had a guy like me to guide him. When I come into camp, I'm going to try to help him. I'm not going to try to beat him up or beat him down.

[The Bulls] are all athletic and young and they're all free willing. They're playing really loose. It's going to be a good challenge. We just can't let them come in and try to steal one in Miami. It's going to be a tough young team that is never going to quit playing.

They're athletic and young and they're all freewheeling. They're playing really loose, so it's going to be a good challenge.

We want to win basketball games, and not let our egos get in the way. Everybody on this team has, at one point, been a star or a starter or a bigger part of their team. ... We have to understand that we are talking about wins, not who is going to have the points.

George said I needed to start giving him something special.

We've got to expect a war. Everybody's overlooking this team, but this is a very good team.
