The Red Sox will have the same problem once they win: everyone wants more money. Derek Lowe probably saw his value go up 40 percent in the couple of weeks.

Smart management doesn't trump everything. There is economic disparity. Part of it is luck, ... The Pirates and Brewers being near the top (of spending efficiency) is just a fluke of them cutting payroll as much as possible.

The question is how many positions can they fill with expensive veterans. The Yankees have a chance to buy and shrewdly deal to avoid a potential collapse of the team, but they also have the ability to go over the cliff, and they could have a long period before they get better.

I think the odds are good that the Red Sox will resist that kind of stuff, ... I don't see any evidence in new ownership history that they will go hog wild on all the champagne they swilled last night and spend money in a foolish way.

Big payrolls can give you an advantage, but smart management always gives you an advantage.
