I had no business living through that.

I made a $50 bet -- a lot of money then -- with my coach that I'd win a medal. I woke up that morning and thought, 'don't get to the bottom and wish you had a second chance, because in the Olympics, you don't get a second chance.' I was so in the moment; I wanted to feel it, I wanted to be in it -- I've used that metaphor for the rest of my life.

I think they should leave the schools in the community. They can really bond with teachers and each other here.

I'm just another old ski racer to them. If they weren't so tunnel vision right now, they might be interested or have the time to ask questions. But I understand where they are at this moment.

I'm happiest when I'm teaching people; I just love it.
