Prior to becoming attorney general, Foti served for thirty years as Orleans Parish, Louisiana/Orleans Parish criminal sheriff.

The leading candidates were the Republican lawyer, Royal Alexander of Shreveport, Louisiana/Shreveport, and the Democratic District attorney/District Attorney, Buddy Caldwell/James D. "Buddy" Caldwell, Jr., of Tallulah, Louisiana/Tallulah. Caldwell won the general election and was sworn in to replace Foti on January 14, 2008. Caldwell later switched to the Republican Party to secure his second term in 2011.
