"Alexander Sanderson" is a former English rugby union footballer who played in the back row for Saracens (rugby club)/Saracens and Sale Sharks. He is the brother of Pat Sanderson who also played rugby for Littleborough RUFC.

His rugby career blossomed under coach Brian Gornall at Kirkham Grammar School. His first Sale Sharks/Sale coach, John Mitchell, also had a great influence on him as did Steve Diamond and Jim Mallinder, both of whom he played alongside when he broke into the first team.

He scored a try on his England national rugby union team/England debut against Romania in November 2001, having captained the England national rugby union team/England midweek side in North America soon after being selected for the England XV against the Barbarians at Twickenham Stadium/Twickenham. He made his Rugby Union Six Nations Championship/Six Nations debut as a replacement against Italy national rugby union team/Italy in March 2003 and was part of the wider 43-man squad for the Rugby Union World Cup/World Cup, playing in the pre-Rugby Union World Cup/World Cup warm-up matches against Wales national rugby union team/Wales and France national rugby union team/France in Marseille.

He was forced to retire from rugby in 2005 due to a back injury.

Of course I've still got those ambitions.

The Worcester coach called in Pat and told him to take a look at this gobby bugger he'd be playing against, ... Needed taking down a peg or two. It was me. I've got rugby Tourette's syndrome, can't stop shouting. All that pent up adrenalin. I've only played against Pat once, when he was at Harlequins and me at Sale.

If I'd stayed up there I'd be out of a job now.
