When a tree gets transplanted, its growth slows down because it's in shock.

They grow very quickly when they're young. In the next 10 years the tree might reach 12 to 15 feet in height. For it to get as big as the mother tree, we're looking at 50 or more years.

Those are opportunistic organisms that attack stressed trees. The cause of death is old age and other environmental factors. This tree has reached its lifespan: anywhere between 150 and 200 years in this area of the country. We estimate the tree to be between 150 and 175 years old.

A lot of new varieties have purple, gold and variegated foliage.
