Tom Dempsey
FameRank: 4

"Thomas John Dempsey" is a former American football placekicker in the National Football League for the New Orleans Saints (1969–1970), Philadelphia Eagles (1971–1974), St. Louis Rams/Los Angeles Rams (1975–1976), Tennessee Titans/Houston Oilers (1977) and Buffalo Bills (1978–1979). He attended high school at San Dieguito High School and played college football at Palomar College. Unlike the "Football (soccer)/soccer style" approach which was becoming more and more widely used during his career, Dempsey's kicking style was the standard (of the day) straight-toe style.

Dempsey is most widely known for kicking a 63-yard Field goal (football)/field goal as time expired to give the Saints a 19–17 win over the Detroit Lions on November 8, 1970 at Tulane Stadium in New Orleans. Prior to 1974 the goal posts in the NFL were on the goal lines instead of the end lines. With time running out in the game, the Saints attempted a field goal with holder Joe Scarpati spotting at the Saints' own 37-yard line. The snap from Jackie Burkett was good, and Dempsey nailed the field goal with a couple of feet to spare. The win was one of only two for the Saints in that dismal season.

We truly deliver our basic training program largely through facilitated, small group instruction. We've been so successful with it, and it is so unique, that we have academies across the United States that come to us and try to see what we want. To see what we're doing now.

I feel they (the Porters) moved ahead faster than they otherwise would have to accommodate us.

We know that material costs have gone up, and I think we can get a 5,000-seat stadium and the 15 courts, ... some of the whistles and bells we looked at might not be there.

We were trying to find a balance that worked for everyone, which was tough to do because you have competing interests. I think everyone is equally unhappy with our result so I think we have a compromise. But I look to these parties to keep working together to make this work.

You really wish it had taken less time. You're glad it didn't take any more time. That's true of all permitting.

There are a number of things along those lines; some of them reduce operational costs, and others reduce capital costs. When you look at the whole thing, we just have to balance all of that out.

The new regulations may work or they may need to be adjusted in the future. We will just have to watch it and see what happens.

In some other areas we are actually fairly low tech and proud of it.
