White people and black people were responding to the film even before the Oscar and now even more. It's because the film is about experiences of life. It's like mythology. It's a story of redemption, how a person responds, how a community acts towards violence.

Gavin was there for me. He's fantastic. He's passionate about his work. We had a good relationship on- and off-set, so I knew I could trust him with my emotions.

But at the same time, it could take place anywhere in the world.
