Merle Haggard
FameRank: 6

"Merle Ronald Haggard" is an American Country music/country and Western (genre)/Western song writer, singer, guitarist, fiddler, and instrumentalist. Along with Buck Owens, Haggard and his band The Strangers (American band)/The Strangers helped create the Bakersfield sound, which is characterized by the unique twang of Fender Telecaster and the unique mix with the traditional country steel guitar sound, new vocal harmony styles in which the words are minimal, and a rough edge not heard on the more polished Nashville Sound recordings of the same era.

By the 1970s, Haggard was aligned with the growing outlaw country movement, and has continued to release successful albums through the 1990s and into the 2000s. In 1994, he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. In 1997, he was inducted into the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame.

We're going back to remember the forgotten ones.

Let's Get Out of Iraq.

In 1960, when I came out of prison as an ex-convict, I had more freedom under parolee supervision than there's available... in America right now.

He has this crazy style, and he has this mystique about him. He's still that way. You know, nobody knows Bob Dylan. They think they do, but I don't think they do. He's very close to his chest with his own cards. I think he'll remain that way.

We've been in many battles together (always on the same side). Over the last few years, we'd become closer than we ever realized ... We were outlaws together.

Buck influenced a lot of people, from The Beatles to me. Buck and I were in a lot of battles over the years, always on the same side. Over the last few years, we'd become closer. He even flew up to Portland to see me when I opened for Dylan last year. We were outlaws together.

He was an asshole, so I hit him.
