While I believe in the media industry's right to use copy protection mechanisms to prevent illegal copying, I don't think that we've found the right balance of fair use and copy protection yet. This is a clear case of Sony taking [digital rights management] too far.

We're still in this new digital era where the entertainment industry wants to protect ... their content, without due consideration of the consumer's right to use that content in a fair way. We need to have an open discussion as to where we should draw the line.

It definitely hit a nerve with a lot of people, ... I think part of it is the encroachment on our everyday lives, people being afraid that we're losing our right to privacy, our right to control our own property.

That quote nicely summarizes the problem.

They're not saying music should be free, they're saying companies should not be able to install something on your computer that you're unaware of and that you have no way of uninstalling.

I think they should have done it right away.

It's extremely disturbing and unsettling that Sony has taken digital rights management to this level of deceit.

This is a step they should have taken immediately.

I know this is the last copy-protected CD I will buy.
