Lou Harrison
FameRank: 6

"Lou Silver Harrison" was an United States/American composer. He was a student of Henry Cowell, Arnold Schoenberg, and K. P. H. Notoprojo (formerly called K.R.T. Wasitodiningrat, informally called Pak Cokro).

Harrison is particularly noted for incorporating elements of the world music/music of non-Western cultures into his work, with a number of pieces written for Javanese style gamelan musical instrument/instruments, including ensembles constructed and tuned by Harrison and his partner William Colvig. The majority of his works are written in just intonation rather than the more widespread equal temperament. Harrison is one of the most prominent composers to have worked with microtones.

I don't want to wear my compositional tools on my sleeve.

Three days in a city now and I'm quite flipped. There's too much noise. I just can't do with it.

Cowell gave me an enormous amount of 'how to' knowledge, including how to write a serial piece before I went to Schoenberg. Also an immense stimulation about world music. He was an absolutely fascinating man, because of his knowledge not only of world music but also of how to do different things.

I'm a terrible pessimist... I really don't think we're going to make it. But every so often, there's some little ray of hope.
