John A. Macdonald
FameRank: 5

"Sir John Alexander Macdonald" , was the List of Prime Ministers of Canada/first Prime Minister of Canada (1867–1873, 1878–1891). The Fathers of Confederation/dominant figure of Canadian Confederation, he had a political career which spanned almost half a century. Macdonald served 19 years as Canadian Prime Minister; only William Lyon Mackenzie King served longer.

Macdonald was born in Scotland; when he was a boy his family immigrated to Kingston, Ontario/Kingston in the colony of Upper Canada (today in eastern Ontario). He articled clerk/articled with a local lawyer, who died before Macdonald qualified, and Macdonald opened his own practice, although not yet entitled to do so. He was involved in several high-profile cases and quickly became prominent in Kingston, which enabled him to seek and obtain a legislative seat in 1844. He served in the legislature of the colonial Province of Canada/United Province of Canada and by 1857 had become List of Joint Premiers of the Province of Canada/premier under the colony's unstable political system.

We treated this (bar) just like any other licensee.

We are obviously disappointed. But we're very pleased as to the (acquittal of) fraud charges.

A relapse into barbarism.

I guess if the police show up I'm getting tickets.

He was wrong to do that. That doesn't mean he committed a crime.

We should be trying to make medical services more male-friendly rather than just blaming the men.

I think the jury saw right through those fraud counts and voted accordingly.

Rich has been going through this now for three years and he's prepared himself mentally and emotionally for this date.

I wish there were 1,000 people here. Still, it's a good start. As Catholics, we need to be concerned with what the future of Canada will look like. We need to take an active interest and be a part of future developments.

It goes ultimately for a jury to decide, the issue of willfulness.
