Denham announced in December 2008 that he would be a candidate for Lieutenant Governor of California in the California lieutenant gubernatorial election, 2010/2010 election. but dropped those plans when Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger appointed Republican State Senator Abel Maldonado to fill the vacancy left by former Lieutenant Governor John Garamendi's election to Congress.
