"Jason Andrew Varitek", nicknamed 'Tek', is a retired American Major League Baseball catcher for the Boston Red Sox. He currently works for the Red Sox as a "Special Assistant to the General Manager". After being traded as a minor league prospect by the Seattle Mariners, Varitek played his entire major league career for the Boston Red Sox. A three-time Major League Baseball All-Star Game/All-Star and Gold Glove Award/Gold Glove Award winner at catcher, as well as a Silver Slugger Award winner, Varitek was part of both the 2004 World Series and 2007 World Series Championship teams, and was viewed widely as one of the team's leaders. In December 2004 he was named the Major League Baseball Team Captains/captain of the Red Sox, only their fourth captain since 1923. He was a switch-hitter.

Varitek is one of only two players, along with pitcher Ed Vosberg, to have played in the Little League World Series, College World Series, and Major League World Series. He additionally participated in Baseball at the 1992 Summer Olympics/Olympic Baseball and the World Baseball Classic. His Lake Brantley High School baseball team won the Florida State Championship his senior year in 1990 and was named the number one high school baseball team in the nation by a USA Today poll. Varitek caught an MLB-record four no-hitters.

They've got a couple of ours. Now we've got a couple of theirs.

More than anything, ... it was a relief.

It's going to be very difficult seeing him in a different uniform, to be honest with you. We didn't want to see Johnny play for another team. I know I didn't want to see Johnny play for another team.

It's definitely crushing. We have our backs against the wall now.

We have to come out and bounce back and be ready to play tomorrow, period. We're right there, we're right in it, that's a good thing.

I just think it should be David Ortiz. Period. The contribution he brings is tremendous. He's just been such a big part of our success.

Right now, we're just trying to get him out, just like everyone else. But he came up big for them.

We have experience. That's all. All you can say is we're not going to quit, no matter what happens.

It's kind of the cards we've been dealt right now. Just continue to try and get ready for the season and the games.
