Hiawatha
FameRank: 6

"Hiawatha" was a pre-historical Indigenous peoples of the Americas/Native American leader and co-founder of the Iroquois/Iroquois confederacy. Depending on the version of the narrative he was a leader of the Onondaga people/Onondaga, or the Mohawk people/Mohawk or both. According to some versions he was born an Onondaga, but adopted into the Mohawk.

Hiawatha was a follower of The Great Peacemaker (Deganawida), a Wyandot people/Huron prophet and spiritual leader who proposed the unification of the Iroquois peoples, who shared common ancestry and similar languages. The Great Peacemaker was a compelling spiritual presence, but was impeded in evangelizing his prophecy by foreign affiliation and a severe speech impediment. Hiawatha, a skilled and charismatic orator, was instrumental in persuading the Seneca people/Senecas, Cayuga people/Cayugas, Onondagas, Oneida people/Oneidas and Mohawks to accept the Great Peacemaker's vision and band together to become the Iroquois/Five Nations of the Iroquois confederacy. The Tuscarora people/Tuscarora nation joined the Confederacy in 1722 to become the Sixth Nation.

I have killed and hurt many people.

Peace will be when you accept it in your heart.

Instead of a man of peace and love, I have become a man of violence and revenge.

All the other chiefs and tribes have accepted the Great Law of Peace. They now live in peace with one another.

It was not the path I was to take. Because of my deeds, I will never know peace again.

The Hiawatha Water Trail Association looks forward to a continuing partnership with the park service and forest service as well as with the many other governmental entities, individuals and organizations that have encouraged, and joined in, developing the trail, ... Without these partnerships, the water trail cannot be a reality.

Every week is a new week, ... It's a new hope for us. It hurts a little to start a season off like that, but they say only the strong survive. The kids that are continuing to practice are not giving up.

Every human longs for peace and love.
