Giacomo Casanova
FameRank: 5

"Giacomo Girolamo Casanova" was an Italians/Italian adventurer and author from the Republic of Venice. His autobiography, Histoire de ma vie (Story of My Life), is regarded as one of the most authentic sources of the customs and norms of European social life during the 18th century.

As was not uncommon at the time, Casanova, depending on circumstances, used more or less fictitious names such as baron or count of Farussi (the name of his mother) or Chevalier de Seingalt (pronounced Saint-Galle, as in French). He often signed his works Jacques Casanova de Seingalt after he began writing in French following his second exile from Venice.

He has become so famous for his often complicated and elaborate affairs with women that his name is now synonymous with "womanizer". He associated with European royalty, popes and Cardinal (Catholicism)/cardinals, along with luminaries such as Voltaire, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe/Goethe and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart/Mozart. He spent his last years in Bohemia as a librarian in Count Waldstein of Bohemia/Count Waldstein's household, where he also wrote the story of his life.

Real love is the love that sometimes arises after sensual pleasure: if it does, it is immortal; the other kind inevitably goes stale, for it lies in mere fantasy.

Marriage is the tomb of love.

As for myself, I always willingly acknowledge my own self as the principal cause of every good and of every evil which may befall me; therefore I have always found myself capable of being my own pupil, and ready to love my teacher.

In one text Casanova sees that women are responsible for Don Giovanni's evil deeds: "The blame lies entirely with the female sex for bewitching his mind and enslaving his heart. Oh, seducing sex! Source of pain! Let a poor innocent person go in peace."

I don't conquer, I submit.

Love is three quarters curiosity.
