People can take simple steps to stamp out waste, such as non-taxpayers filling in a simple form, or married couples making sure they use up both tax-free personal allowances.

This is partly due to people taking on responsibilities - such as buying a home or getting married - later on in life. It's often only the serious events like these that trigger a real need to budget.

Whether through apathy or confusion, the failure to claim these credits is just one way we're needlessly gifting vast sums to the taxman each year.

The taxman acts tough on tardy returns and unpaid tax, so if you've received self- assessment forms from the Revenue and haven't done anything about it, act now. The initial £100 fine for late returns is automatic. But why waste this sum, and potentially much more, when expert help is at hand to ensure your forms arrive on time and in order?
