That is so much of the market it should reach a tipping point, ... It won't make sense for the automakers to build two fleets, one clean and one dirty.

We think this is the case that will decide that question.

The new partnership has no real drivers. A problem of this size is not going to be solved by a small amount of money and cheerleading.

The longer you wait to decide when to start cutting, the steeper the cuts will be.

The fundamental problem is they simply don't save as much oil as they could. They fall far short of what's technically feasible and economically feasible.

The two biggest contributors to global warming are power plants and motor vehicles. If you deal with them, you deal with more than two-thirds of the problem.

These emission cuts must begin in the next 10 years if we want to pull this off with a minimum of economic impact. As the National Academy of Sciences has emphasized, delay makes the job much harder. A slow start will mean a crash finish.

[THE CHALLENGE:] Translating global warming science and policy into plain language that conveys the immediacy of the problem is tough, ... But it's the only way to craft legislation that will bring results in our lifetime.
